The Handmaid's Tale: Rita's Point of View

Dear diary,

Today was all about preparation for the Ceremony. Offred needed a bath and guess who had to supervise? It's me, of course. As if I didn’t have enough things to do as it is! And let me tell you, she took her time as well. I was certain the meat would be burnt by the time I got out. As for last week, when I asked her for steak, she brought back chicken. What is so hard about just following orders? I had an easier time with the one before her. In any case, her occupation is a disgrace. What would motivate a woman to become a handmaid? You should be ashamed to give your body away to random men! I can't help but make faces whenever I see her red attire. She tries, from time to time, to get to know us. It tires me to talk to her since I'm not interested in doing so. Often, I catch her hiding near the door, listening in on my conversations with Cora. Something about her feels suspicious to me.

My dear diary, you heard about her first here. She is bad news. Last week, I could have sworn I saw Nick wink at her. I should also keep an eye on him. I suspect they are having an affair. I have an obligation to catch them in action. It is illegal, for one, and highly disrespectful towards our Commander as well. We've been graciously welcomed by that man, and it is infuriating that she would do such a thing in his house!

  1. Hi Éva,
I think you are quite deft at impersonating your character! Great work and wonderful blog entry.

You might want to break your paragraph into two. I'd change paragraphs here: " My dear diary, you heard about her first here."

Keep at it, Éva. I'm always looking forward to reading you. :)

  2. Very coherent and creative blog! I love how you put your work in the form of a diary. However, I'm not sure about the person confessing, but overall, your blog is still very clear! You give a good introspection of the emotions, the characters, the actions and motivations present in the story. Good job Eva!

  4. I didn't think that I was such a bullet for you. Go get your steak yourself if you are not happy! Plus, my decisions are none of your business!
